CHICken is a photographic project that initially started as a simple “cattle call” (no pun intended). The Photographers Moreno Monti and Matteo Tranchellini brought these chicks to life. You won’t believe it but all they used was a simple light set, nothing else was needed: these guys & gals took the center stage. See for yourself or even better scratch on over to the pledges and get your chicken paraphernalia now. Soon their agents will be asking for big bucks to get them out of the coop. Some of them are now official divas and have hundreds of likes on Instagram.
THE WINNING IDEA
One shared passion,
two italian photographers
Matteo has always been fascinated by the beauty of birds and since boyhood has had a dream of flying. In 2013 he decided to go in search of a Cochin as a pet for his studio garden in Milan. He met a farmer who invited him to an aviary exhibition… That very same day, the Cochin hen Jessicah (cue Unchained Melody) stole his heart. Thanks to her, Matteo and Moreno surprisingly found themselves on this journey. That’s when the CHICken project was born. The CHICken series was photographed in Italy at the Milano aviary exhibition. Many of the breeders were worried that the birds were not posed according to the breed standard. Instead, what they didn’t understand was just how well the birds had done their homework, they were natural born posers. All of the chickens and roosters in this book are exemplary show birds. The photographic collection consists of more than 200 photos of 100 diverse types of chickens.
High quality is everything
The CHICken book was designed with the highest quality in mind. It is made of 190 pages in portrait format (300x270mm) with 85 high res photos, 3 gatefold spreads. Every image is paired with an inspiring phrase printed in fine silver Pantone that pays tribute to beauty. The hard cover is 2.4 mm - 1 in thick and is made of Curious Matter Black Truffle paper that weighs 125g. The high quality paper has a silky texture similar to fine sand and is very pleasant to the touch. The beautiful plumage of a feather is embossed on the cover and the title is printed in silver hot foil. Thanks to the offset print technique used you’ll be able to have high quality photos that are clear and precise, not dot-based like digital printing. The black pages and the dark background allow the subject to emerge like models on the runway. We opted for a quality flat-opening sewn binding to emphasize the high definition photographs. This special binding makes it possible to lay the book flat when it is opened, flush with the surface it is on, creating a pleasant coffee table book appearance. We chose certified paper, produced exclusively with cellulose fibers from sustainably managed forests. The book will be printed, bound and packaged here in Italy for optimum quality and constant control of the final product. The collection is made of Limited Edition Photographic Prints in two formats (large 800x800m and small 240x240mm); 7 different Chick Click Posters of 500x700mm; a Sexy 2019 Calendar with 13 different shots; 4 collectable journals and a pack of 8 different chicks composites.
Losing our heads with all the chicken fuss
CHIC!ken is already a huge success. We achieved more than 1700% of our initial goal and Kickstarter awarded us by putting us in their “Projects We Love” section. It’s the second time we received the awards since our FEBO campaign. What could be better than a community recognition? We are now way more than 2000 backers! The entire team has worked with passion and the response has been overwhelming. We couldn’t be more thrilled that so many people in the world share our passion. This project has broken barriers that even we ourselves didn’t know possible, but always secretly dreamed of. There is a micro media frenzy going on. Numerous blogs and online sources have been reporting about our project. We’ve been interviewed by radios from Canada and Australia. It's hard to believe, but we were in the morning news of a famous American TV channel and Bored Panda did an exclusive mini-documentary on the project.
