GENIUS AND SIMPLICITY
Square Wave is the brainchild of Ivan Black, a British sculptor, engineering enthusiast and artist whose work has been celebrated and displayed at some of the most significant institutions in the world such as the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, Cass Foundation and Palmyra Sculpture Center. Ivan’s work is often deceivingly simple but moves in beautifully complex ways, evoking principles of physics and mathematics. Square Wave was born out of this drive to create educational, moving art, originating from a much larger sculpture whose construction process was extremely difficult to replicate, one of many reasons why we turned to hand made production in Italy.
Making Square Wave
We have become used to a world where things are created at absulderly low costs and are blindly sourced from producers who do not pay attention to the quality of life or the safety and workers. We decided to produce the sculpture in Italy, the home of quality production. Producing in Europe with high quality materials obviously comes at a much higher cost, but we take pride in the fact that we choose to pay the extra price required to assure the quality of our products, but more than anything, we understand the importance of paying our workers well and producing in a country with a high quality of life.
STRESS RELIEVING KINETIC ART
Square wave is made up of 24 connected metal rods which curve and mutate unexpectedly with the introduction of energy. The repetition of identical elements is precisely calibrated to create complex fluid structures. Square Wave combines iconic natural forms with mathematical formulae. Each bend and curl of the material is precisely calibrated to create a seamlessly integrated mechanism.
Kinesis to Kinetic
The word Kinetic finds its origins in the ancient Greek word “kinesis” meaning motion or the act of motion. The definition of kinetic is deceptively simple, because the history and domain which it has occupied ever since humanity began theorizing about it, is a vast immensity of space. The renowned German theorist, philosopher and mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz became interested in theories of motion when he arched his interests towards explaining Christiaan Huygens and Christopher Wren’s findings on elastic collisions, starting his long search for the truth seas apart from his final discoveries...
AN ELEGANT GIFT
Every Square Wave is unique in that it is assembled by hand with care and precision in order to create the sculpture’s stunning movements and visual effects. We are proud to say that we personally know the craftsmen and women who make our Square Wave, and because of this we are sure of the quality our customers receive. Each Square Wave comes with its own basic hanging kit (pictured). In addition we now offer the brand new magnetic stand, designed in Italy and created to showcase your Square Wave in the best possible way. All Square Wave materials are high quality and exclusively sourced in Europe.
